New 150MW BESS Station to Be Built Near Site of Fukushima Nuclear Plant
One of the largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) stations in Japan is to be built in Naraha Town, Fukushima Prefecture, south of TEPCO’s Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2. The town will purchase the land and a private company, Naraha Sustech (ナラハ・サステック), will build and operate the proposed 150 MW BESS station under a long-term lease – with a target startup date of 2027.
Previously, the site housed facilities related to the decontamination of radioactive materials, but the land has now been cleared. The BESS facility will be connected to the TEPCO and Tohoku EPCo grids, and it will store excess electricity generated during the daytime and sell to power companies when there is a shortage.
An entrepreneurship training facility will also be built on the site to promote the creation of local renewable energy-related industries and accelerate the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Naraha Sustech says it will develop the project site as a “renewable energy park” and will build a BESS station and a facility for renewable energy-related startups to attract companies committed to the circular economy.
