JERA, PowerX JV in Deal to Manage BESS Capacity

JERA Cross, a wholly owned subsidiary of JERA (a joint venture owned by TEPCO Fuel & Power and Chubu EPCo) and PowerX, announced that it had signed a basic agreement for a comprehensive collaboration to jointly promote #BESS (Battery Energy Storage System)-related businesses. As the first phase of this collaboration, the two companies are considering utilizing the balancing capacities of grid-scale BESS being developed by PowerX across Japan in their respective #electricity businesses.

PowerX is developing grid-scale BESS with a capacity of around 8 MWh at a pace of about 10 sites per year. Under this initiative, the balancing capacities will be jointly utilized in JERA Cross’s carbon-free power supply service, PowerX’s renewable energy-based electricity service ‘X-PPA’and power trading markets. PowerX’s cutting-edge grid-scale BESS technology is central to the new collaboration with JERA Cross, aiming to optimize power supply and demand across Japan. This initiative marks the first of its kind in the industry, as the two companies join forces to harness renewable energy through innovative energy storage solutions.

Industry First with Long-Term Vision for BESS

This initiative is said to be the first in the industry where power utilities collaborate in operating BESS stations. In addition to optimizing power supply and demand, the initiative is expected to enhance the predictability of investment returns in grid-scale BESS projects, particularly as investment is expected to expand as #renewables capacity grows over coming years. The companies aim to launch the initiative within FY2025.

Looking ahead, the two companies plan to expand their collaboration beyond the joint utilization of grid-scale BESS to explore and develop a wide range of potential BESS applications.
