J-Power Enters the Onshore Wind Power Aggregation Business
J-POWER announced that it will begin providing aggregation services to onshore wind power plants. J-Power has been providing this service for solar power generation, but now it will also cover onshore wind. J-POWER aims to attract customers by leveraging its knowledge of onshore wind power, which has the second largest installed capacity in Japan, and its high-power generation forecasting accuracy.
With the spread of Feed-in-Premium (FIP) power sources and the increase in FIP power sources converted from Feed-in Tariff (FIT), there is a growing need for power generation forecasting and planned value management services in the industry. With the government’s policy of expanding wind power in the 7th Strategic Energy Plan and further promoting the transition from FIT to FIP, J-POWER expects the market for aggregation services to expand.
Advanced Forecasting to Improve Market Stability
As an aggregator, J-POWER submits generation plans to the Organization for Cross Regional Coordination of Transmission Operators (OCCTO), settles imbalance charges with general transmission and distribution companies on behalf of the power-producing companies, and receives commissions from them. If an imbalance occurs, J-POWER will cover the cost.
J-POWER will use a method developed jointly with Waseda University to improve the accuracy of wind power generation forecasts. The method analyzes trends in weather models, wind forecast results, and actual power generation results to improve forecast accuracy from 30 minutes to 48 hours in advance. The method was introduced to wind power operated by the J-POWER Group, and its effectiveness has been confirmed.
