TEPCO PG Predicts Its First Electricity Curtailment

Tokyo Electric Power Company Power Grid (TEPCO PG) has forecast that it may have to curtail a small proportion of its renewable energy output for the first time in FY2025 based on the priority power supply rule. Using FY2023 solar and wind power generation data, and the volume of interconnection line utilization, TEPCO PG estimated the supply and demand for FY2025 and predicted that 2.64 million kWh may be curtailed – which is a curtailment rate of just 0.009% of total solar and wind generation.

This is expected to occur during the holidays in May and the pumped storage inspection period in the fall. Currently, TEPCO PG is the only general transmission and distribution company in Japan that has not yet curtailed any of its renewable energy output.

Growing Renewable Capacity and Supply-Demand Projections

The forecast for the supply-demand balance based on past results has also been released, showing that on May 3, 2025, demand will only reach 2.477 million kWh, including power going to pumped hydro and battery storage – which means that renewable energy supply will need to be cut by 90,000 kWh.

The total capacity of solar and wind energy sources in the TEPCO PG area is steadily increasing by around 1 million kW per year, reaching 20.87 million kW as of the end of September 2024.
